The full plate project
What is the full plate project?
The Full Plate Project is the community heart of Food for Thought. It is a grassroots initiative born in the Forest of Dean, designed to ensure that no family is left behind when it comes to food, skills, and confidence.
We believe that a "full plate" isn’t just about having enough to eat—it’s about having the knowledge to cook, the confidence to experiment, and the dignity of providing a nutritious meal for your family, even on the tightest of budgets.

Why We Started
With 23 years of experience in the food industry, I have seen how food can be a bridge. However, I have also seen how the rising cost of living and food poverty are creating barriers for our local families. Many are stuck in "survival mode," relying on expensive processed foods because they lack the equipment, ingredients, or the culinary confidence to cook from scratch.
The Full Plate Project was created to break that cycle.

What We Do
We host free, hands-on cookery sessions for families across the Forest of Dean and Newent. We don't just hand out recipes; we mentor parents and children together. Our sessions focus on:
Pantry Magic: Learning how to turn basic, low-cost staples into vibrant, tasty meals.
Alternative Education: Using the kitchen as a classroom to help children engage with math, science, and sensory exploration in a way that feels like play.
Sensory Support: Helping neurodiverse children (and "fussy" eaters) desensitize to textures and smells through "Ghost Veg" missions and "Food Science" experiments.
Community Connection: Bringing neighbors together to cook, share a meal, and realize they aren't alone.

Our Mission: From Survival to Self-Sufficiency
Every penny we raise through our own bake sales, crowdfunders, and local grants goes directly back into the community. It funds the induction hobs, the fresh produce, and the travel costs needed to bring these sessions to your doorstep.
At its core, The Full Plate Project is about more than just food. It’s about empowerment. It’s about making sure that every person who walks into our kitchen leaves with a full plate, a new skill, and the belief that they can provide a better future for their family—one meal at a time.
